F-16s vs. Water

The government is about to ink a deal that will let Pakistan buy 18 old and 18 new F-16 fighters, along with the usual accompaniment of spares, ammunition, and god knows what (training manuals!).
Well for 36 planes, the bill is going to be $5 Billion.

Now, I’m usually a very ardent support of the military, et. al., but I just cannot sleep easy thinking we will have ONLY three-six planes for 5 Gazillion-Billion-Trillion bucks. That sounds like a whole lot of waste.

Lets look at the flip side. If the textile industry exports $5 billion worth of widgets, it keeps 10,000s of people employed. In our case, we will be keeping how many people employed, or borders safe with 36 planes? Aren’t we already getting the new jet fighter that we are co-developing with the Chinese?

First lets understand what 5 Billion is??? Many of you suck at math or perhaps many of you don’t give a hoot at to how much that is – but you should. ITS YOUR MONEY and here is a good realization on how much it is…

If you had $1 Million and were to spend $1 per second, it will take you ONLY 11.57 days and you would burn (run out of all your money). That’s it – ONLY 11-and-a-half-days! Poof! gone!

Now consider if you had $1 Billion and were to spend $1 per second, do you have any idea how long it will take you? No? Well let me help, it will take you  31.71 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!! You’d have to be 31.71 YEARS OLD to exhaust the billion and you would have to be very very close to being 80 years old, to be able to burn through 2.5 Billion Dollars!!!!!!

I hope that gives you some form of semblance on the magnitude of the money involved here.

So, here is something we CAN do “positive” with the $5 Billion that the Government would be spending on the 36 planes!

We can spend half-of-it! Not full – Just 50%. Sorry need-for-speed-pilots, you only get 18 planes.

The government can buy 18 more planes for $2.5 Billion. We’ve had 35 odd planes for the past 20 years almost, I am sure we can do good with 18 more planes for now. Until the cash flows of the country improve :)  What are the odds of the Indian’s attacking on the Thursday afternoon. Pretty fucking slim! besides we both have the “A-Bomb” so I think we will be a little bit more careful before taking any unnecessary phadda!

And here is what do we do with the remaining $2.5 Billion.

We invest in “clean water filtering” technology. I am 100% sure we can “buy” (or lease/license) this technology from around the world at a fraction of the cost, perhaps say $10 million. So we spend $10 million, and we still have $2,490 Million left.

Next we highlight lets say 5,000 villages. So we will be looking at 5,000 villages where we have to install this “technology” (or solution) where we will be providing “clean” drinkable ground water. This will not cost us anything. I am sure Pakistanis upon hearing that the Government is going to invest $5 billion towards clean drinkable water, will seek nomination for villages, we will get all the names we need.

If one were to do the math, $2,490,000,000 divided by 5,000 villages would equal – $498,000 per village – as the share of the $2.490 Billion. Consider that amount for a second…. $498,000 – that’s a whole lot of money.

Oh but wait, that is in Dollars. Lets convert that using Rs. 60.00 as the given rate for conversion and we have Rs. 29.880 Million share per village.

Remember – this money belongs to the people of Pakistan.

I am 1000% fucking sure, that we CAN get some-bloody form of a industrial class filter per village that can churn out  that will be for say Rs. 10.000 Million  – i.e. 1 crore!!!

If not – then say Rs. 20.000 Million – that’s 2 crore. I am sure of it. In fact – I am be double-sure that a unit costing 2 crore will be able to do something like  2,000 gallons per day (if nothing else). 2,000 gallons is a lot of clean drinkable water, and you know what, no one would fuck with this source of clean water. God knows how bad they all need it.

Lets spend that Rs. 20.000 Million on the clean water technology for 5,000 villages. The remaining money can be held and used for spares and operations cost for 3 years.

In short, other than some smart-pilot-jockey wishing to be on a damn plane that is way too costly for me to even think about, I’d rather we have clean drinkable water in 5,000 villages.  Plain & Simple.

You can debate on health care, schooling, drainage, training, farming, etc. but water is the basic commodity of life. We need water to build around it. Let get the 5,000 villages with clean drinkable water and then lets move forward.

F16s or Clean Drinkable Water? You choose!
