Gemach

A gemach is a Jewish mutual-aid institution.

Also called: free-loan fund · gemilut chasadim

Some gemachim lend money without interest; others lend equipment or provide other forms of community assistance. A financial gemach typically uses donated or communal capital, makes interest-free loans, collects principal repayments and recycles the money to future borrowers. Because the fund depends on repayment rather than interest income, guarantors and repayment discipline can be important to preserving the capital pool.
