Tzedakah

Tzedakah is the Jewish obligation of charitable giving and economic support, a concept connected with justice or righteousness rather than optional generosity alone.

In Maimonides’ well-known hierarchy, the highest form is assistance that prevents lasting dependency—such as a gift, interest-free loan, partnership or employment that allows the recipient to become self-sufficient.

In practice

Common mistake: translating tzedakah as casual charity and missing its obligatory and structural dimension.
