Posek

A posek is a rabbinic authority who issues rulings on questions of Jewish law.

Also called: Poskim

A posek analyzes the Torah, Talmud, legal codes, rabbinic responsa and precedent and applies them to a specific factual question. In finance, a posek might determine whether a structure is a loan or investment, whether a fee constitutes ribbit, or whether a particular Heter Iska covers a transaction.
